Unit 2 Reading Activities Plus Questions

USA Speaker One:
Before the First Pitch

Coach Ramirez: Alright team, listen up! The game starts in 10 minutes. Let’s stay sharp on the field and play like we practiced.

Sam: Coach, who’s starting as the pitcher?

Coach Ramirez: Dylan is. His arm is strong today. And remember—stay ready to catch and throw quickly.

Dylan: Got it. I’ve been working on my curveballs, Coach. But they kind of make my hand hurt.

Coach Ramirez: Thanks, Dylan. That's good to know.

Jess: Coach, should we swing early or wait for the right pitch?

Coach Ramirez: Wait for a good one. But if it’s over the plate—swing hard. And Jess—watch for the ball and not just the strike.

Sam: If we get on base, should we run right away?

Coach Ramirez: Only if you see a chance. And don’t forget to slide if it’s close!

Jess: What if I hit a home run?

Coach Ramirez: Then you better jog around those bases with a smile. And high-five your teammates when you get back to the dugout!

Dylan: What if I get tired on the mound?

Coach Ramirez: Let me know. We’ve got others ready. Just give it your best for as long as you can.

Sam: And if someone’s stealing a base?

Coach Ramirez: Call it out and make the throw. Let’s stop them from scoring!

Jess: What if I miss the ball, Coach?

Coach Ramirez: Shake it off and stay focused. Go for the rebound—I mean, get ready for the next play!

(The umpire walks onto the field)

Coach Ramirez: That’s our signal. Let’s play smart, play together, and have fun. Let’s go, team!

Sam, Jess, and Dylan: Let’s go.
