Unit 6 Reading Activities Plus Questions

USA Speaker One:
A Football Training Day in Ireland

Coach Riley: Alright team, this is our final training before the big tournament in Dublin. Since we’re a mixed boy-girl team, we’ll follow official World Cup-style rules. From kick-off to the final whistle, I want focus, communication, and smart decisions.

Max: Coach, is Leo still our goalkeeper?

Coach Riley: Yes, he’s been solid. Jamal and Ray will start as defenders. Maya, you’ll be the central midfielder.

Maya: So I’m linking defense and attack, right?

Coach Riley: Exactly. Keep the ball moving and support both ends of the pitch.

Maya: Should I pass to the wing or dribble up the centre?

Coach Riley: Depends on the space. Pass when it's tight, dribble when you’ve got room. And if you get the chance—shoot.

Leo: What if they foul me during a save?

Coach Riley: Stay calm. The referee will blow the whistle. If it’s in the box, we could earn a penalty.

Maya: And if we win a corner kick?

Coach Riley: Take it quickly. Look for Max or our striker near the back post.

Max: And what if the goal is disallowed for offside?

Coach Riley: Accept it and move on. Stay sharp next time.

Leo: Will there be a substitute at half-time?

Coach Riley: Likely. Everyone needs game time.

Maya: Are we trying to win today?

Coach Riley: Always. But it’s not just about one goal. It’s about playing as a team.
