Unit 25 Reading Activities Plus Questions

English for Mixed Martial Arts

Coach Sarah:
Hey, Jake! Welcome to MMA training. This is the Octagon, where you'll fight.

Jake:
Wow, it looks smaller on TV. How long do the fights last?

Coach Sarah:
Fights are divided into Rounds. You win by Knockout, TKO, Submission, or Decision. You will need to practice takedowns.

Jake:
Takedowns seem hard. What if I end up on the ground?

Coach Sarah:
Then you're Grappling. Try to get a good Guard or even the Mount position.

Jake:
What about the Referee?

Coach Sarah:
The Referee makes sure you follow the rules. Listen to him. Your Corner will also give you advice. Avoid illegal Striking.

Jake:
Striking? Like punches and kicks?

Coach Sarah:
Exactly. Learn to Sprawl to avoid Takedowns. The fighters on the Card are really good at Ground and Pound.

Jake:
And if I want to hold someone close?

Coach Sarah:
That's the Clinch. It can help with Takedowns. Learn BJJ and practice your Jab. We don't want you to have a KO.
