Unit 21 Reading Activities Plus Questions

Skiing: Exploring the Mountain

Instructor Anna:
Welcome to the world of skiing! First, you need your Skis, Boots, and Poles.

Skier Ben:
Ready to hit the slopes, Anna!

Instructor Anna:
Great! Make sure the Bindings attach your Boots to your Skis securely. And don’t forget your Goggles and Helmet for safety.

Skier Ben:
Safety first! Got my helmet and goggles on. Where are we headed?

Instructor Anna:
We'll take the Ski lift to the top of the Slope. Remember to always be aware of others on the Run.

Skier Ben:
Sounds good. I love skiing on a sunny day. Is the Slope Groomed today?

Instructor Anna:
Yes, it is! Perfectly groomed. Are you going to try a Black diamond run?

Skier Ben:
Maybe later! The Powder looks amazing over there! But I'll be careful of the Ice. I like to Carve down the mountain, making smooth, clean turns. I try to keep my skis in a Parallel turn. Using the Edge of my skis helps me control my speed. I follow the Fall line down the hill.

Instructor Anna:
Excellent! Remember, for those who are more advanced, you might want to try Off-piste skiing, but always check for Avalanche warnings.

Skier Ben:
Good point. And what about the Moguls? Are they challenging today?

Instructor Anna:
They can be! Remember, whether you are using your Skis, Poles, Boots, Bindings, wearing Goggles and a Helmet, riding the Ski lift up the Slope, navigating a Run, or avoiding a Black diamond, understanding Powder, Ice conditions, or Groomed slopes, or enjoying Off-piste, always Carve safely and maintain a Parallel turn using your Edge, being aware of the Fall line and avoiding Moguls, and being aware of potential Avalanche dangers, safety comes first!
